About Scott C. Hecht

Before founding Scott Hecht LLC, Scott solved clients’ problems for more than 30 years at Stinson LLP, a full-service AmLaw 200 business law firm where he was an equity partner. At Scott Hecht LLC, Scott uses his substantial experience representing businesses in a wide range of industries in litigation and other disputes, transactions and advising engagements to inform his mediation practice and continued legal representation of business clients.

In the few years Scott has been a mediator, he has facilitated the resolution of disputes with aggregate demand totals approaching $500,000,000 and total settlements of more than $100,000,000. Disputes of these magnitudes are also representative of the matters in which Scott has represented his clients as a practicing lawyer and advocate.

Scott has mediated disputes involving a broad range of issues, including insurance, professional liability, product liability, corporate governance and fiduciary duties, consumer protection and employment. These disputes have comprised two- to multi-party disputes; single- and multi-plaintiff cases to class actions; and pre-litigation to litigation and post-judgment disputes. Examples include:

  • a nine-figure dispute between an engineering firm and its London market insurers concerning losses related to the engineering, procurement and design of pollution mitigation systems in coal-fired power plants;
  • a class action brought by agriculture industry businesses against a manufacturer based on alleged defects in robotics systems;
  • a series of consumer class actions against various manufacturers, distributors and retailers products that allegedly suffered from age-related efficacy and safety degradation;
  • a dispute between the CEO of a public company, who was a substantial shareholder, and the board of directors.

Scott has completed the Harvard Mediation Intensive, an executive education program of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, and Civil Mediation Training offered by the Center for Dispute Resolution at the University of Missouri School of Law. Scott is on the mediator panels for the United States District Courts of Kansas and the Western District of Missouri.

Scott’s law practice primarily has involved litigating business insurance disputes and advising clients ranging from small businesses to large public companies on business insurance matters. In addition to insurance, Scott’s law practice has also involved litigating commercial disputes and ERISA fiduciary matters, including class actions and government investigations. For many years early in his career, Scott was a management-side labor and employment lawyer.

Scott is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors and the Treasurer for the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. Scott was a founder and formerly a board member of CLJ Foundation, a non-profit providing life skills and job training to developmentally disabled adults in Wyandotte County, Kansas.
